International workshops
The Gnatwork will be hosting two international workshops (Bangladesh 2018 and Brazil 2019) over the course of the project.
The first international meeting was held in Bangladesh (September 2018), hosted by Gnatwork Management board member Dr Dinesh Mondal, a senior scientist within the Laboratory for Parasitology, International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). The second Gnatwork international meeting was held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil on 4-8 November 2019, hosted by Dr Maria Isabel Maldonado Coelho Guedes at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG).
These week-long workshop started with a conference day, to bring together experts in entomology. International experts in vector biology were invited to speak around three theme and travel bursary recipients had the opportunity present a poster on their current research. The conferences were followed by four days of training for early-career researchers across sandflies, blackflies and biting midges. Interactive lectures and practicals on biology, ecology and epidemiology were given and training provided in practical field-based sampling and laboratory techniques, including DNA Barcoding.
